Josh Pobrislo, South Portland firefighter, paramedic and local health officer, will be presented the Captain Joel Barnes Community Service Award on Sunday at the Maine Mariners game.
The award, sponsored by the hockey team, Teamsters Local 340 and the Berwick Volunteer Firefighters Association, honors Berwick Fire Capt. Joel Barnes, who died in 2019 after fighting a fire and saving the life of a fellow firefighter.
Pobrislo will be recognized for his work with Project Outreach, a program he started to connect unhoused and asylum-seeking people with services during the pandemic.
“In response to an unusual and unexpected influx of unhoused individuals, families and refugees,” his nomination stated, “Pobrislo implemented an outreach program to assist these vulnerable populations with access to basic medical care, services and essential supplies.”
Pobrislo and award finalists for the award will be recognized at the Mariners game on Sunday against the South Carolina Stingrays at Cross Insurance Arena in Portland at 3 p.m.
