Top-seeded Gorham let a 12-point lead slip away, then scored the last eight points to beat No. 4 Massabesic, 51-43, in a Class AA South girls’ basketball semifinal Wednesday night at Cross Insurance Arena.
Gorham (17-3) will face No. 2 Scarborough (16-4) at 7 p.m. Saturday.
Massabesic ends the season at 13-6.
This game was won at the free-throw line. While Gorham went 18 for 22, Massabesic was just 2 for 14.
Massabesic led 22-20 at the half. The Rams scored the first 10 points of the third quarter and led 41-29 with 1:24 left in the third when Anna Nelson (15 points) hit a long 3. The Mustangs rallied, though, tying the game 42-42 with 4:38 to play on a 3 by Hannah Samson (13 points).
With 2:34 left, Micaela Jacobs made a foul shot for the Mustangs to tie the game at 43-43.
Brylee Bishop’s two free throws gave Gorham the lead for good, and Ellie Gay’s layup with 2:02 to play pushed the lead to 47-43. Nelson and Bishop each made a pair of foul shots in the final minute.
Gay added 11 points for Gorham, while Bishop scored 10.
Mary Duffy scored 13 points for Massabesic, while Jacobs had 11 points and 12 rebounds.
