WATERVILLE — Colby scored three straight goals on its way to a 4-2 win over the University of Southern Maine in a men’s hockey game on Tuesday.
The Huskies (6-7-1) took a 1-0 lead in the first period on a goal by Austin Marini. Alex Bourhas tied it with 23 seconds left in the period for the Mules (10-3). John McElaney gave Colby the lead 1:55 into the second period and Justin Grillo made it 3-1 7:28 into the third. Tyler Mitchell got Southern Maine within a goal later in the third, but Jack Sullivan had an empty-net goal with 1:31 left.
CJ Hapward had 21 saves for Colby, while Mason Palmer stopped 37 shots for Southern Maine.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
(1) AUBURN 55, MISSOURI 54: K.D. Johnson scored 17 points, including five straight within the final 90 seconds, and the Tigers (19-1, 8-0 SEC) survived a scare from the Tigers (8-11, 2-5), winning in Columbia, Missouri, in the program’s first-ever game as the nation’s top-ranked team.
Johnson converted a three-point play with 1:29 remaining to put Auburn ahead 53-51, then added a layup with 45 seconds left for a four-point advantage, and the Tigers held on from there.
Walker Kessler had 13 points and 12 rebounds for Auburn, which shot 30% from the field.
Javon Pickett led Missouri with 17 points, and Jaron Coleman added 10.
(4) BAYLOR 74, KANSAS STATE 49: Jonathan Tchamwa Tchatchoua and Kendall Brown each had a double-double as the fourth-ranked Bears (18-2, 6-2 Big 12) won their third game in a row since rare consecutive losses, beating the Wildcats (10-9, 2-6) in Waco, Texas.
Tchamwa Tchatchoua scored 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting, including a 3-pointer from the top of the key, and the 6-foot-8 post player grabbed 12 rebounds. Brown had 10 points and 11 rebounds.
LJ Cryer added 14 points with three 3-pointers and Adam Flagler had 13 points and five assists for Baylor (18-2, 6-2 Big 12), which was home for the first time since successive defeats in the Ferrell Center two weeks ago.
Those losses to Texas Tech and Oklahoma ended the Bears’ 21-game winning streak and cost the defending national champions their No. 1 ranking in the AP poll. They rebounded with wins last week at West Virginia and Oklahoma.
The Wildcats (10-9, 2-6) led only after Ismael Massoud made a 3-pointer on their first shot of the game, only three days after they almost pulled off an upset over fifth-ranked Kansas.
(14) VILLANOVA 67, DEPAUL 43: Justin Moore scored 16 points, Collin Gillespie had 14 and the Wildcats (15-5, 8-2 Big East) beat the Blue Demons (10-9, 1-8) for the 22nd straight time, in Villanova, Pennsylvania.
The Blue Demons last topped the Wildcats on Jan. 3, 2008.
Two national championships later, the Wildcats continue to reign as the class of the conference and shook off a sluggish start to cruise again at the Pavilion.
(20) UCONN 96, GEORGETOWN 73: Adama Sanogo scored 19 points to lead the Huskies (14-4, 5-2 Big East) to their fourth straight win, a rout of Georgetown, in Storrs, Connecticut.
Isaiah Whaley and Jordan Hawkins each added 15 points for the Huskies, who never trailed. R.J. Cole had 14 points, seven assists and six rebounds, while Tyrese Martin chipped in with 13 points.
UConn ran past the Hoyas, outscoring them 27-6 on the fast break and dominated the boards, outrebounding Georgetown 40-28,
Freshman Aminu Mohammed had 15 points to lead Georgetown, which lost its seventh consecutive game and sixth straight to start the conference season. Collin Holloway had 11 points and Donald Carey added 10.
(24) ILLINOIS 56, (10) MICHIGAN STATE 55: Trent Frazier scored a game-high 16 points, and the Illini (14-5, 7-2 Big Ten) held on to beat the Spartans (15-4, 6-2) in Champaign, Illinois, and take sole possession of first place in the Big Ten.
Illinois was without two of its brightest stars: All-American center Kofi Cockburn (concussion) and guard Andre Curbelo (COVID-19 health and safety protocols).
The Illini led by as many as 15 points early in the second half before Michigan State mounted a furious comeback in the final four minutes.
ENDICOTT 66, UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 63: Jalen Echevarria hit a 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer to cap a 12-3 run to close the first half and the Gulls (10-4, 7-2 Commonwealth Coast) held off a late surge to defeat the Nor’easters (3-15, 2-9) in Biddeford.
Cameron Ray had 19 points for Endicott. Bill Arseneault added 12 points and Echevarria had 10.
Alex Kravchuk led UNE with 16 points, while Anthony Senesombath added 14 and Eavey DeBrito chipped in with 13.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
(23) IOWA 107, PENN STATE 79: Caitlin Clark had 20 points, a career-high 17 assists and seven rebounds, nearly missing her third triple-double in four games, and the Hawkeyes (13-4, 7-1 Big Ten) beat the Nittany Lions (9-9, 3-5) to spoil Makenna Marisa’s third 30-plus performance of the season, in University Park, Pennsylvania.
Clark, who was named the Big Ten player of the week for the fourth consecutive time on Monday, was 6 of 17 from the field with four 3-pointers — one from the logo. Clark set a Big Ten record for assists in a conference game, breaking the mark on a pass in the lane to AJ Ediger for a 98-73 lead, and she was taken out a few seconds later.
ENDICOTT 55, UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 43: The Gulls (10-7, 7-3 Commonwealth Coast) took control with a 16-8 second-quarter run and beat the Nor’easters 99-8, 7-3) in Biddeford.
Sarah Dempsey scored 18 points, Emily St. Thomas added 13 and Tara Laugeni 11 for Endicott.
Jordyn Franzen had 14 points for UNE.
WOMEN’S HOCKEY
COLBY 3, WESLEYAN 0: McKinley Karpa had a pair of second-period goals as the Mules (9-3-0, 5-3-0 NESCAC) beat the Cardinals (6-7-0, 2-6-0) in Waterville.
Meg Rittenhouse scored a power-play goal 4:01 to give Colby a 1-0 lead. Bri Michaud-Nolan had a pair of assists, while Lexi Cafiero added an assist.
Rei Halloran stopped 27 shots for Wesleyan, while Nina Prunster stopped 20 shots.
