“Three beams on the bridge were hit. Maine DOT crews are responding,” wrote Maine DOT spokesperson Paul Merrill in an email at around 4 p.m. “In past cases like this, a bridge maintenance engineer typically goes to inspect the bridge before traffic will be allowed to return to normal.”
According to a social media post by the Maine DOT, no injuries were reported.
Both lanes of I-295 should be reopened by 7 p.m. and bridge maintenance engineers are scheduled to inspect the bridge again, Merrill said.
At approximately 5 p.m. traffic was backed up on I-295 headed northbound beginning at the Durham Road overpass and ending just before the Desert Road overpass in Freeport.
