LEWISTON — Police said a two-vehicle crash Wednesday afternoon on outer Lisbon Street killed three people and a dog.
The two vehicles collided head-on at 2075 Lisbon St., or Route 196, near Valley Beverage.
Police were not releasing the names of those involved until they were positively identified and their families had been notified, Lt. David St. Pierre said in a news release Wednesday evening.
Two people died at the scene and the third died at the hospital from injuries sustained in the accident.
“It appears evident at this time that speed was a contributing factor,” he said.
Scott Belongie said he was traveling behind a sedan when the white SUV attempted to pass another vehicle in the middle turning lane, veered into oncoming traffic and hit the sedan. “Five more seconds and that would have been me,” Belongie said.
Authorities closed the road between Gayton and South Lisbon roads.
An accident reconstructionist, a detective and several officers are at the scene.
The crash was reported shortly before 3 p.m.
