An Oxford County man is in police custody after a carjacking Saturday night during which he stabbed the driver of the vehicle, stole it, and led police on a chase through three Cumberland County towns, authorities said.

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that Mason Day, 31, of Brownfield was arrested after leading officers from Cumberland and York counties, Maine State Police and Gorham police on a pursuit through Standish, Baldwin and Gorham. The pursuit began shortly after 6 p.m. when officers spotted the stolen car, a 2005 Buick LeSabre, in Standish.

The owner of the vehicle had notified authorities that his car was stolen by a man who had stabbed him with a knife. The victim was not seriously injured, according to the sheriff’s office.

The pursuit started in Standish and proceeded through Baldwin before Day led police back into Standish. During the pursuit, he sideswiped another car, causing damage but no serious injury to the operator, authorities said. He then drove into Gorham while being pursued by several law enforcement agencies. Police officers put down spike mats on three occasions before a state trooper used a pit maneuver to disable the stolen car on Route 25 in Gorham.

The pursuit didn’t end there. Day next fled on foot, and during that chase, he was bitten by a police dog. Officers took him into custody, but not before he kicked one of them in the face, authorities said. Day sustained minor injuries from the dog bite and was treated at the scene. He was later transported to the Cumberland County Jail. Three deputies suffered minor injuries during the pursuit and arrest.

Day faces charges of armed robbery, eluding a police officer, reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, passing a police roadblock, assault on an officer, refusal to submit to arrest, and violating conditions of release, according to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office. He is also being held on multiple arrest warrants – unrelated to the carjacking – out of Cumberland and Oxford counties.

Day was being held without bail Sunday night at the Cumberland County Jail and is tentatively scheduled to appear Tuesday in Portland District Court.
