BELFAST — A Maine man pleaded guilty on Wednesday to a charge that he fatally shot another man outside a camper because of a romantic dispute.
Austin McDevitt, 24, of Morrill, had been charged with murder in the death of Shane Sauer, 26, of Belfast.
McDevitt’s attorney and a prosecutor reached a joint-sentencing recommendation of 29 years in prison, the Bangor Daily News reported.
McDevitt and Sauer were both romantically involved with the same woman. The woman lived with Sauer, though their relationship was going through a difficult period, the prosecutor said.
McDevitt was an old high school boyfriend of the woman and they had rekindled their relationship, the prosecutor said. That caused conflict between the two men.
McDevitt shot Sauer outside the camper in March 2019, police said.
