BIDDEFORD — The Bowdoin College men’s lacrosse team used an eight-goal, second-quarter outburst to ease past the University of New England, 19-7, on Tuesday night.
The Polar Bears improved to 2-0, while the Nor’easters fell to 1-1.
Nick Conway spurred the Polar Bears to an early 3-1 lead, scoring a pair of early goals. Jeff Powers scored the last goal of the first quarter and the first goal of the second, sparking a 7-0 run by Bowdoin that also included two goals from Chris Fowler.
The Polar Bears exploded for eight goals overall in the second quarter, extending their lead to 12-4 at halftime.
Bowdoin continued to roll with five goals in the third quarter, pushing the lead into double figures.
Powers led Bowdoin with four goals and an assist in the victory, while Conway had three goals and two assists. Jake Crossman and Chris Fowler also had three goals each, while Will Murtagh added a score and three assists.
Sam Carlin won 11-of-14 in the faceoff dot in the victory, collecting seven ground balls. Caleb Geitz had three ground balls.
Bowdoin’s Jack O’Connor made three saves in 50:39 of action before giving way to Michael Covell, who stopped on shot in the final 9:21. The Polar Bears owned a 46-23 advantage in shots and went 3-of-5 with the extra man.
The Polar Bears visit Amherst for a NESCAC contest on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Nordic skiing
Bowdoin Nordic skiers Elliot Ketchel and Renae Anderson will compete at the NCAA Skiing Championships this week in Vermont
Both sophomores, Ketchel and Anderson will be making return trips to nationals as the duo also qualified last winter.
Action gets underway at the Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, Vermont, today with Ketchel in the men’s 10K freestyle at 10 a.m., followed by Anderson in the women’s 5K freestyle at noon.
After an off-day on Thursday, the pair will be back in action on Friday with the women’s 15K classical at 10 a.m., followed by the men’s 20K classical at noon.
