BRUNSWICK — Unofficial polling results show Republican Jeffrey Timberlake defeated Democrat Lois Kilby-Chesley with roughly 62 percent of the vote in the race for Maine Senate District 22.
Results early Tuesday morning showed Timberlake with 9,310 votes and Kilby-Chesley with 5,735.
Timberlake posted briefly on social media early Wednesday morning thanking his district for supporting him.
Timberlake will step into his new role representing District 22 immediately after his current term serving House District 75 expires. The two candidates were vying to replace Majority Leader Garrett Mason, who is terming out.
Timberlake has been in state government for eight years and his last two elections, in particular, were clear runaways, taking in 68 and 62 percent of the vote.
District 22 includes Durham, Lisbon, Sabattus, Litchfield, Leeds, Wales, Greene, Leeds, Wayne and Turner.
Timberlake is a local farmer in Turner, which he said on his Facebook page taught him “how to work hard, be team players and make tough decisions.”
“The decision to leave my beautiful farm to sit inside of the State House hasn’t always been easy, but I’m happy with what has been accomplished during my time in Augusta,” he wrote. However, there is still work to do, he said in a post, adding, “Healthcare costs are too big of a worry for Mainers, we can get taxes lower and we must do more to fight the opioid epidemic.”
