For more than a month, I have been writing to Sens. Susan Collins, Angus King and 1st District Rep. Chellie Pingree daily, expressing my opinion about the situation at the border and the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh. I have gotten little more than political spin from all three. I have significant concerns and questions about many issues:
• Why are children at the border being sent to court unaccompanied?
• What are the consequences for not reuniting all the children and parents?
• What is the criteria for declaring a child ineligible for reunification and what documented proof is there that 900 children fell into that category?
• Why should Trump be able to nominate a Supreme Court justice when he is under an active criminal investigation?
• Couldn’t Congress draft legislation that would make it illegal for a president to go into a meeting with a foreign leader without producing some type of record?
• Why can’t you enforce the emoluments clause?
• Why don’t you enforce the antinepotism clause?
I ask these questions and I get little better than silence. Not one of my elected officials seems to be willing to hold Trump and his administration accountable.
In my grand naiveté I had suggested a weekly (daily) congressional press conference like they have at the White House. It would be a way to answer some of the questions I am sure people have. So far no response.
