COLLEGE

Seth Benjamin was named the head women’s soccer coach at the Unversity of Southern Maine.

Benjamin, who was a member of the USM men’s soccer team from 1997-2000, replaces Lisa Petruccelli, who resigned to pursue other opportunities.

Benjamin most recently served as head coach of men’s soccer at the New Hampton School in New Hampshire, where his team finished 11-3-2 last season. He was also the head coach for women’s soccer and women’s lacrosse at Green Mountain College in Poultney, Vermont, from 2011-14, and an assistant women’s soccer coach at the University of Vermont from 2010-11.

FOOTBALL: Alabama, the defending champion, is a unanimous No. 1 in the preseason coaches’ poll, with Clemson No. 2 and Ohio State No. 3.

MEN’S BASKETBALL: North Carolina is honoring Hall of Fame coach Roy Williams by putting his name on the playing floor.

OLYMPICS

U.S. TRIALS: USA Track and Field selected Eugene, Oregon, as the new site of the 2020 U.S. Olympic trials.

The organization originally awarded the trials for the Tokyo Games to Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, California, but the bid was reopened following uncertainty over the Los Angeles-area stadium.

BEACH VOLLEYEBALL: Kerri Walsh Jennings, a three-time gold medalist, will retire from the sport after the Tokyo Olympics in two years.

BASKETBALL

NBA: The Dallas Mavericks acquired center Chinanu Onuaku from the Houston Rockets for the rights to forward Maarty Leunen.

The Mavericks also get cash with the right to send Houston the 2020 second-round pick they obtained from Golden State in 2016.

AUTO RACING

NASCAR: Nationwide signed a two-year extension with Hendrick Motorsports that will increase its sponsorship of Alex Bowman to 20 races beginning next season. Bowman also received a one-year extension from Hendrick through 2020.

Nationwide became a corporate partner of Hendrick Motorsports in 2014 and majority sponsor of the No. 88 Chevrolet with driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. from 2015 through 2017. Bowman replaced Earnhardt this season and Nationwide is sponsoring 19 races with the new driver of the No. 88. Bowman has eight top-10 finishes.

FORMULA ONE: Niki Lauda, a three-time world champion, underwent a lung transplant.

U.S. MEN: The U.S. will play Colombia in an exhibition at Tampa, Florida, on Oct. 11, one of the six friendlies planned for this fall.

The U.S. doesn’t have a competitive match until the CONCACAF Gold Cup next June. It also has exhibitions against Brazil on Sept. 7 at East Rutherford, New Jersey; Mexico on Sept. 11 at Nashville, Tennessee; England on Nov. 15 at London; and Italy on Nov. 20 at a site to be determined.

MLS: Atlanta United fullback Sal Zizzo likely will miss the rest of the season because of a knee injury.

TENNIS

CITI OPEN: A weary John Isner hit serves in the low 90s mph and was broken twice in the opening set during a 6-4, 7-6 (6) loss to 152nd-ranked Noah Rubin in the second round at Washington.

The No. 2-seeded Isner was coming off a title in Atlanta last week and a semifinal run at Wimbledon last month.
