A spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration says that the small plane that crashed late Saturday afternoon in Jefferson is now at the Wiscasset Airport.
A crew of about 15 people labored Sunday to flip the Cessna 185 right-side up and turn it so it could be dragged across the bog to Augusta Road so it could be loaded on a truck and taken to an airport hangar for inspection.
No one was injured in the crash and the plane’s two occupants were able to get themselves out of the plane, which had flipped over its nose and had stopped on its roof.
On Sunday morning, Jefferson Fire Chief Walter Morris said he had been advised that the plane should not be disturbed until the FAA could investigate the crash.
It was not clear Sunday whether either the FAA or the National Transportation Safety Board, the other federal agency that investigates crashes, had granted that permission because media contacts at those agencies could not confirm it.
Kathleen Bergen, a spokeswoman with the FAA, said Sunday only that the aircraft owner needs approval from the FAA or the NTSB to move the aircraft. The aircraft has to be removed from the water and transported to a hangar at a local airport for the investigation, and aircraft owners are responsible for having the aircraft moved.
On Monday, FAA spokesman Jim Peters said the FAA had given permission, but he did not know when. Later, he corrected himself to say the NTSB had given permission.
