Kate Hall of Casco fell short Thursday night in her bid for a third NCAA long jump title, as she was unable to qualify for the finals at the outdoor national championships in Eugene, Oregon.

Hall, a junior at the University of Georgia who won the outdoor title last year and the indoor title this year, had a best jump of 20 feet, 13/4 inches in her three attempts. The cutoff for the top nine competitors who reached the final round of three jumps was 20-101/2.

BASKETBALL

NBA: The Philadelphia 76ers said Bryan Colangelo resigned as president of basketball operations after an independent firm investigated allegations he used Twitter to anonymously trash some of his players and fellow executives, and defend himself against criticism from fans and media.

The 76ers added that Coach Brett Brown, a South Portland native, would oversee basketball operations on an interim basis and the search for a new general manager would begin immediately.

• Los Angeles County prosecutors said Glen “Big Baby” Davis, a former Boston Celtic, was charged with attacking a man outside a club in West Hollywood, California, and faces a felony assault charge. If convicted, Davis could face seven years in prison.

COLLEGE: Texas basketball player Andrew Jones was approved for online-based coursework for summer school and will move into a dorm, big steps toward an eventual return to the program as he continues treatment for leukemia.

SOCCER

WORLD CUP: Hope Solo, a World Cup winner and Olympic champion with the United States, wants her country to lose one of its biggest soccer contests: FIFA’s vote on the 2026 World Cup host.

“I can’t say it should be awarded to Morocco,” Solo said, “but I don’t think it should go to the United States, and that’s hard to say.”

Concerns about the financial dealings of the United States Soccer Federation and the closed men’s league system led Solo to that conclusion.

• Marcus Rashford scored from long range as England beat Costa Rica 2-0 at Leeds, England, in its final World Cup warmup match.

BASEBALL

NECBL: Cam Climo had two hits with five RBI as the Winnipesaukee Muskrats defeated the Sanford Mainers 8-1 in a New England Collegiate Baseball League game at Sanford.

Climo hit a two-run double in the third inning and a three-run homer in the sixth for the Muskrats (1-1).

John Rizer scored on a groundout in the sixth for the Mainers (0-2).

GOLF

U.S. OPEN: Tiger Woods will play the opening two rounds with Justin Thomas and Dustin Johnson. The USGA released its tee times for the tournament next week.

Phil Mickelson, Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy tee off together in the morning of the first round. Woods, Johnson and Thomas are together in the afternoon.

PGA: Seamus Power birdied the final hole for a 5-under 65 and the St. Jude Classic lead, with Phil Mickelson, Steve Stricker and Brooks Koepka a stroke back at Memphis, Tennessee.

FOOTBALL

NFL: Terrell Owens said he won’t attend the induction ceremony for the Pro Football Hall of Fame in August, an unprecedented decision by an enshrinee.

Owens was voted into the hall in February after being denied in his first two years of eligibility.

COLLEGE: A Texas grand jury in Waco, Texas, declined to indict two Baylor football players in an alleged sexual assault.

HORSE RACING

BELMONT STAKES: Triple Crown contender Justify glided over the track in his first trip over the Belmont Park strip.

The strapping chestnut colt is the odds-on favorite to complete the series sweep Saturday following victories in the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness.

CYCLING

CRITERIUM DU DAUPHINE: Julian Alaphilippe of France beat Dan Martin in a sprint to win the fourth stage of the event as the race reached the mountains at Lans-En-Vercors, France.
