SOUTH PORTLAND — Hunter Owen struck out 15 over six scoreless innings and reliever Riley Hasson stifled a seventh-inning rally Thursday as South Portland held off Sanford for a 3-1 victory in an SMAA baseball game.
Hasson came on with two outs in the final inning and the bases loaded to get the final out and preserve the victory for the Red Riots (13-2) against the Spartans (5-9).
Kody Hammond-Daniels hit a two-run double in the second and Caden Horton added an RBI single in the third for South Portland.
Ryan Connarton singled in a run for Sanford in the seventh.
CHEVERUS 9, SCARBOROUGH 7: Chris Cimino singled home the tying run as Cheverus (9-5) rallied for six runs in the seventh inning to leapfrog the Red Storm (6-9) at Scarborough.
Maxx St. John led the Stags with four hits and three RBI. Griffin Watson had three hits and scored twice for Cheverus, and Morgan Pratt knocked in four runs for Scarborough.
NOBLE 9, DEERING 1: Jake Lacroix hit a two-run single, and Will Shapleigh and Bryce Cantin added RBI singles for the Knights (7-7), who used a four-run fourth inning to pull away from the Rams (6-8) at Portland.
Lacroix also pitched a five-hitter with five strikeouts and one walk. He finished with three hits.
MARSHWOOD 7, THORNTON ACADEMY 1: Marshall Smaracko singled home a run and also scored during a four-run first inning, and the Hawks (8-6) went on to defeat Thornton Academy (8-6) at South Berwick.
Nate Curtis of Marshwood struck out 10 and held the Trojans to four hits, including two singles by Jake LaPlume.
TRAIP ACADEMY 17, NORTH YARMOUTH ACADEMY 7: Shane McNeill hit a single, a double and a home run for six RBI, and Connor Reed added two singles, a double and two RBI, and pitched his first career win as the Rangers (10-4) beat the Panthers (1-9) at Kittery.
Bobby Lane added two singles, a double and three RBI for Traip.
Joe Strabley had three hits for NYA.
GORHAM 5, KENNEBUNK 3: David Drew singled, stole second and third, then beat the throw home on Kyle King’s fly to right to give visiting Gorham (10-4) a 4-3 lead over Kennebunk (4-10) in the fourth inning.
SOFTBALL
FRYEBURG ACADEMY 10, YARMOUTH 5: Paige O’Connell had two hits and two RBI, and Tina Leblanc added three hits for the Raiders (11-4), who erased a 2-0 deficit and pulled away from the Clippers (8-7) at Fryeburg.
Morgan Fusco chipped in with a two-run double for Fryeburg. Madison McIntyre and Jade Currier-Graffam added an RBI single each.
WINTHROP 30, MOUNTAIN VALLEY 1: Layne Audet tossed a no-hitter and Kate Perkins hit for the cycle with two singles, a double, a triple and a home run to go with six RBI, leading the Ramblers (11-3) past Mountain Valley (0-14) at Rumford.
Moriah Hajduk added a double, a triple and a home run for five RBI for Winthrop, and Abby Shumway had three singles.
Audet struck out seven, giving her 104 for the season.
BOYS’ LACROSSE
FRYEBURG ACADEMY 17, GRAY-NEW GLOUCESTER 6: Caleb Bowles scored six goals, Josh Frye added four and Caleb Eklund had three as the Raiders (10-0) handled the Patriots (5-5) at Fryeburg.
Liam Chisari and Gunnar Gurnis added two goals apiece.
CAMDEN HILLS 8, WINSLOW 2: Bryce Tyler, Thomas Griebel, Charlie Griebel and Owen Rokus each scored two goals for Camden Hills (6-4) against the Black Raiders (5-5) at Winslow.
Colby Nadeau and Isaac Lambrecht answered for Winslow.
Alex Demers had 13 saves for the Black Raiders.
MESSALONSKEE 16, EDWARD LITTLE 3: Austin Pelletier scored five goals to lead Messalonskee (6-5) past the Red Eddies (3-8) at Oakland.
Dawson Charles added four goals, Colin Kenney scored three and C.J. Reardon made seven saves for the Eagles.
GIRLS’ LACROSSE
NOBLE 7, WESTBROOK 2: Delainy Blaisdell, Cassie Chabot and Emily Carlton each scored twice for Noble (4-6) against the Blue Blazes (1-9) at Westbrook.
Chabot added three draw controls and two interceptions. Mary Keef scored for Westbrook.
MAINE GIRLS’ ACADEMY 11, SANFORD 9: Catherine Reid had seven goals and four assists, and Hope Olson added three goals and four assists as the Lions (3-7) downed the Spartans (0-9) at Portland.
Valentina Drown scored twice for Sanford.
MARSHWOOD 5, GORHAM 4: Marin Smith had three goals and an assist for Marshwood (3-7), which built a 5-3 halftime lead and defeated the Rams (3-7) at Gorham.
Celine Lawrence and Meagan Wentworth also scored for the Hawks. Gorham was led by Haley Keefe with a goal and an assist; Hallie Shiers, Carson Battaglia and Faith Dillon also scored.
Skyler Amsden had 12 saves for Marshwood and Paige Hume six for Gorham.
WINDHAM 9, SCARBOROUGH 6: Riley Beem’s wrap-around goal late in the opening half broke a 2-2 tie, spurring the Eagles (6-4) toward a 6-3 halftime lead and a victory against Scarborough (2-8) at Windham.
Beem finished with four goals and an assist. Belle Skvorak added two goals. Ellie Smith scored three and Kathleen Murphy made 19 saves for the Red Storm.
THORNTON ACADEMY 9, SOUTH PORTLAND 4: Alana Pettaway, Cat Henaire and Addie Paradis scored two goals and one assist each, and Dana Sirois made nine saves for the Golden Trojans (5-5), who took a 9-2 lead against the Red Riots (5-5) at Saco.
Jena Leckie scored twice for South Portland.
FALMOUTH 15, BONNY EAGLE 7: Caitlyn Camelio scored five goals, and Abi Blakeman and Christina Oakes added two apiece for the Yachtsmen (9-2), who took a 14-2 halftime lead over the Scots (3-7) at Standish.
Lindsay Frazier chipped in two goals and an assist for Bonny Eagle.
