VESTAL, N.Y. — Alyssa Derrick hit a tie-breaking two-run homer in the fifth inning as the University of Maine avoided elimination from the America East softball tournament with a 5-3 win over Maryland-Baltimore County, after losing 3-1 to Binghamton earlier Wednesday.
Against UMBC (12-31), Erika Leonard hit a run-scoring single in the first inning and an RBI double in the third. Laurine German also had two hits.
Annie Kennedy allowed only two hits and two unearned runs in five innings of relief to earn the win.
In Maine’s tournament opener, Jessica Rutherford scored on a groundout in the first inning, then hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth for Binghamton (17-23). Lauren Martinez made it 3-0 with home run in the sixth inning.
Derrick homered in the sixth, and German finished with two hits.
Maine (21-24) will play at 4 p.m. Thursday against an opponent to be determined.
BASEBALL
LITTLE EAST TOURNAMENT: Southern Maine’s tournament-opening game against Rhode Island College was halted after five innings because of dense fog in Boston, with USM trailing 4-1.
The game will resume at 11 a.m. Thursday.
FOOTBALL
CBS SPORTS, Navy and the American Athletic Conference have agreed to a 10-year contract extension through 2027 that will keep television rights to the Midshipmen’s home football games with the network.
Most Navy home games will be shown on CBS Sports Network, along with some basketball, baseball and lacrosse. CBS Sports Network is also the home of most Army and Air Force home football games.
