SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. — Abby Kelly scored 27 points, and Bowdoin rode a strong start to an 80-68 victory over nationally third-ranked St. Thomas in the Skidmore Invitational women’s basketball tournament Saturday afternoon.

The Polar Bears (2-0) raced to a 32-19 lead after one quarter against the Minnesota school, which fell to 1-1 after losing for just the second time in 34 games.

ST. JOSEPH’S 76, KEENE STATE 71: Kelsi McNamara scored 15 points and made four free throws in the last 30 seconds of overtime to put away a win for the Monks (2-1) over the Owls (0-3) in a consolation game at Keene, New Hampshire.

UNE 67, PLYMOUTH STATE 42: Sam McDonald and Olivia Shaw each scored 12 points in the first half while leading the Nor’easters (3-0) to a 41-22 lead over Plymouth State (2-1) at Plattsburgh, New York. Both players finished with 20 points.

CASTLETON 76, BATES 75: Alexis Quenneville scored 24 points and hit a 3-pointer with 8 seconds left in regulation to give the Spartans (2-0) the lead for good in a win over the Bobcats (0-1) at Smith in Northampton, Massachusetts. Nina Davenport scored 31 points for Bates.

SOUTH ALABAMA 68, MAINE 46: Aaron Calixte scored 13 points for the Black Bears (0-3), but the Jaguars (2-2) had four players score in double figures in beating Maine in a tournament game at Uncasville, Connecticut.

BOWDOIN 67, WESTFIELD 61: Jack Simonds scored 16 points, and the Polar Bears (2-0) went 7 of 9 from the free throw line down the stretch to beat the Owls (2-1) in a tournament at Westfield, Massachusetts.

David Reynolds added 15 points, while Zavier Rucker had 11 points and 11 boards.

COLBY 124, UNE 97: Sam Jefferson scored 22 points, Dean Weiner had 17 points and 18 rebounds, and the Mules (2-0) spanned the halves with a 35-12 run that gave them a 69-44 lead over the Nor’easters (1-2) at Biddeford. Gavin Dibble scored 22 points for UNE.

HUSSON 84, ST. JOSEPH’S 75: Raheem Anderson had game-highs with 27 points and 10 rebounds, and the Eagles (1-1) used a 13-0 run midway through the second half to take control in a win over the Monks (1-1) at Standish.

Jack Casale had 20 points to lead St. Joseph’s, while Aaron Hall and Quinn Richardson-Newton added 14 each.

VERMONT TECH 89, SMCC 83: Willie Brown had 19 points for the Seawolves (6-2, 2-1 Yankee Small College Conference), but Titus Smith led the Knights (6-1, 4-1) to a victory with 27 points, 10 rebounds, and 12 assists at Randolph, Vermont.

COAST GUARD 91, USM 40: Justin Kane’s 20 points led the Bears (1-1) in a victory over Southern Maine (1-1) at New London, Connecticut.

J.T. Cox added 12 points for the Bears. Kevin Weisser’s eight points was high for the Huskies.

MEN’S HOCKEY

COLBY 9, MIDDLEBURY 1: J.P. Schuhlen and Mario Benicky each had three goals to lead Colby over the Panthers in a NESCAC opener at Middlebury, Vermont.

Nick O’Connor added a goal and an assist for the Mules.

WILLIAMS 4, BOWDOIN 3: Myles Cunningham and Marcus Mollica scored second-period goals to give the Ephs a 4-2 lead, and they survived Bradley Ingersoll’s third-period tally for Bowdoin to win a NESCAC opener at Williamstown, Massachusetts.

Matthew Lison and Thomas Dunleavy also scored for the Polar Bears.

NORWICH 4, USM 0: The Cadets (4-2-1, 4-1-1 NEHC) scored three second period goals and cruised past the Huskies (1-4-1, 1-4-1) at Northfield, Vermont.

Anthony D’Aloisio and Paul Leger split time in net for Southern Maine and combined for 26 saves.

SALVE REGINA 6, UNE 4: Jack Billings had three goals and an assist to lead the Seahawks (6-1, 5-1 Commonwealth Coast ) past the Nor’easters (2-3-1, 2-3-1) at Biddeford.

Tucker Ross, Tyler Seltenreich, Brett Mecrones, and Dylan Bengtson scored for UNE.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

NORTHEASTERN 3, MAINE 0: Aerin Frankel turned back 39 shots as the Huskies (7-6-2, 5-3-1 Hockey East) shut out the Black Bears (8-6-1, 3-3-1) at Boston.

Skylar Fontaine, McKenna Brand and Taytum Clairmont scored.

Carly Jackson had 23 saves for Maine.

BOWDOIN 3, COLBY 3: Bowdoin goalie Kerri St. Denis stopped a penalty shot with 1:45 left in overtime to preserve a tie for the Polar Bears (1-0-1, 1-0-1 NESCAC) against the Mules (0-1-1, 0-1-1) at Waterville.

Carly Thomas scored twice for Colby.

CASTLETON 4, USM 1: Amanda Piknick scored in the first period to give the Huskies (2-5, 2-4 NEHC) a lead, but Jocelyn Forrest, Hannah Rose, Nicolle Trivino, and Lisa Kilroy each scored to lead the Spartans (4-3-1, 3-2-1) to a win at Rutland, Vermont.

NORWICH 7, UNE 1: Adrieana Rossini and Amanda Conway each scored twice as the Cadets (8-0-1, 6-0 New England Hockey Conference) handled the Nor’easters (1-2-3, 1-2-3) at Northfield, Vermont.
