The Saco deputy police chief has been tapped to take over the department when the current chief retires at the end of the year.

Raynald Demers, who has been deputy chief of operations at the Saco Police Department for six years, was chosen as the new chief by City Administrator Kevin Sutherland. The council is scheduled for a confirmation vote on his appointment on Dec. 5.

If confirmed, Demers will take over as chief on Jan. 1. He will replace Chief Brad Paul, who is retiring after 40 years with the department. Demers has worked for the city for more than 30 years.

Sutherland said it was clear during interviews that Demers is dedicated to Saco. He cited Demers’ role in the success of the Citizens’ Police Academy and his dedication to fostering positive relationships between officers and community members.

“He is well-respected within the community and has a strong connection to its community leaders – a testimony shown in part by the significant number of letters of support my office received,” Sutherland said in a news release. “I am confident he will continue a long tradition of inspiring confidence in the community, at the same time using this opportunity to work with the department to recommend changes going forward. Ray strives for transparency, fairness and honesty, and holds himself to the highest standard of professionalism and ethics.”

During the selection process, a screening committee reviewed nearly 50 resumés from across the country and interviewed several candidates.
