USM field hockey opens conference play with win

Kyrstyn Keating scored the go-ahead goal eight minutes into the second half and the University of Southern Maine held on for a 2-1 win over Bridgewater State in a Little East Conference field hockey opener at Bridgewater, Massachusetts on Thursday.

A pass from Tayla Smedberg set up Keating’s goal.

Michaela Demers scored on a penalty stroke three minutes into the second half to give the Huskies (1-2) a 1-0 lead.

The Bears (2-1) responded with a goal from Samantha Hayes less than two minutes later.

Amanda Kasbohm made four saves for the Huskies.

WOMEN’S SOCCER: Shannon Hart scored two goals to lead NHTI (3-0, 2-0 Yankee Small College) to a 4-0 victory over Southern Maine CC (1-1, 1-1) at Concord, New Hampshire.

Celia Sartwell had a goal and an assist for the Lynx, who outshot the Seawolves 8-1.

Chelcie Phinney made four saves for SMCC.

GOLF

PGA: Roberto Castro was just as good before the rain as he was after the storms cleared and shot a 7-under 65 on Thursday for the temporary lead in the BMW Championship at Carmel, Indiana.

Heavy rain delayed the opening round for 31/2 hours and changed Crooked Stick’s greens from hard and fast to soft and accessible.

The first round was to resume at 8 a.m. Friday, with more bad weather in the forecast.

Brian Harman had a 66. Dustin Johnson drove into the water on the 18th hole for bogey, giving him a 67.

Castro was among the 70 who advanced to the third FedEx Cup playoff event. His next goal is to try to get into the top 30 in the FedEx Cup and advance to the Tour Championship.

EUROPEAN TOUR: Ben Evans made five birdies in his first six holes and finished with a 6-under 65 and a one-shot lead in the opening round of the KLM Open Spijk, Netherlands.

Eight players, including Dutch amateur Rowin Caron, were bunched behind Evans on 5 under at The Dutch.

Defending champion Thomas Pieters, a captain’s pick in the Europe Ryder Cup team, pulled out of the tournament after being stung by a bee this week.

MLS: Landon Donovan appears set to come out of retirement and rejoin the Los Angeles Galaxy.

The team tweeted “He’s back” on Thursday along with a video of Donovan putting on a No. 26 Galaxy jersey.

Now 34, Donovan retired after the Galaxy won the 2014 Major League Soccer title. Earlier that year, Donovan was controversially cut from the U.S. roster by Coach Jurgen Klinsmann, denying him a trip to a fourth World Cup.

HOCKEY

WORLD CUP: Edmonton Oilers forward Connor McDavid, the first overall pick in the NHL 2015 draft, was named captain of Team North America.

Philadelphia forward Sean Couturier and Florida defenseman Aaron Ekblad will serve as alternate captains for the team made up of Canadian and U.S players age 23 or under as of Oct. 1.

TENNIS

HALL OF FAME: Kim Clijsters and Andy Roddick are the International Tennis Hall of Fame nominees in the recent player category for the class of 2017.

The hall announced Thursday who is on the ballot.

Clijsters won four Grand Slam singles titles.

Roddick’s 2003 U.S. Open championship was the last Grand Slam singles title for an American man.
