A Bridgton man died Friday after being injured in an apparent hit-and-run Thursday in New Hampshire.

New Hampshire State Police said Jonathan Kauffman, 21, died at Maine Medical Center in Portland, where he was taken after the crash on Route 25, near the intersection with Route 153 in Effingham, about 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Police said Kauffman and his 2014 Harley-Davidson motorcycle were found in the middle of the westbound lane on Route 25. They said a white four-door sedan with New York black-on-orange plates was seen leaving the site after the crash.

The driver was described as a black woman, medium build, wearing glasses and with a ponytail.

Kauffman, who police said did not appear to be wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, was taken to Maine Med by helicopter.

Police said Kauffman and the driver of the sedan might have been involved in an altercation before the crash. Police said the investigation indicates that the sedan stopped suddenly in front of Kauffman and he wasn’t able to stop before hitting the rear of the sedan.

Anyone with information on the crash is asked to call New Hampshire State Trooper Gary Wood at (603) 223-8838 or email Trooper Greg Dube at greg.dube@dos.nh.gov.
