Two Oxford County residents were arrested Friday night for allegedly bringing heroin from Massachusetts to Maine for sale.

They were identified as Derrek Verrill, 26, and Gayle Gilmore, 18, both of the town of Sweden. Each was charged with aggravated trafficking in heroin and illegal importation of heroin, said Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

According to McCausland, agents from the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency, the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office and Fryeburg police have been investigating Verrill and Gilmore for a month and learned the two were buying heroin in Massachusetts weekly and returning with it to Maine to sell.

They were arrested late Friday night on the West Fryeburg Road in Fryeburg, and a search of their car turned up about 60 grams, or 600 doses, of heroin with a street value of about $10,000, McCausland said.

Verrill and Gilmore were taken to the Oxford County Jail, where bail was set for Verrill at $15,000 cash and at $5,000 cash for Gilmore.

McCausland said the investigation is continuing and additional arrests are expected.
