The Maine Judicial Branch issued a warning to the public on Thursday about a telephone scam in which incoming calls show up falsely as coming from a court number.
Mary Ann Lynch, spokeswoman for the state courts, said in the warning that dozens, and perhaps hundreds, of people in Maine received phone scam calls on Wednesday afternoon.
The scammers are using a technological trick to make it appear the calls are coming from the court system, although the calls are not actually coming from the courts.
“No one from the Maine courts will ever call and ask for Social Security numbers, credit card account numbers or bank account information to be provided over the phone,” Lynch said in the written warning.
Lynch advised anyone who receives such calls to just hang up.
