LACONIA, NH – Mr. Richard L. Smith, 87, died Wednesday February 3, 2016 at the Lakes Region General Hospital in Laconia, New Hampshire. He was a resident of the New Hampshire Veteran’s Home in Tilton, NH. Richard grew up and spent most of the early part of his life in Rumford, Maine and then lived in Manchester, NH for over 40 years.

He was born in Rumford, Maine on August 24, 1928 the son of Manetta Lovejoy O’Hanley. He is predeceased by his mother and his step-father Alexander O’Hanley. He is also predeceased by his companion of 38 years Priscilla Nerbonne.

Richard worked as an Electrician for Demers Electric in Rumford, ME, Snow’s Electric in Auburn, ME, LeBlanc Electric in Manchester, NH, and ended his employment as a custodian at Amherst Middle School in Amherst, NH.

Richard was a member of the 82nd Airborne stationed in Fort Benning, Georgia and also in Fort Myer, Virginia. He was also a member of the American Legion and VFW. In addition, he loved to ski, spend time with his mother and family in Maine, and time with his companion Priscilla which included many hours of dancing to big band music, fishing with John, Katelyn and Lindsey, and visiting with Tom, Bob and Lori at their homes, and at the lake.

Richard is survived by Thomas Nerbonne of Barre, MA, Robert Nerbonne of Sanborton, NH, and Lori Nerbonne who were like his own children. And in addition, John, Katelyn, and Lindsey Nerbonne who were like grandchildren to him. Richard is also survived by his special cousins James MacPhee and his wife Joan of Bath, ME, Barbara, MacPhee Wyman and her husband George of Brunswick, ME, Sally MacPhee Fiske of Nova Scotia Canada, and Judith MacPhee Reindl of Brunswick, ME and many other cousins.
