Donald was born in Troy, New York, on May 20th, 1940, and grew up in nearby Waterford, a son of Joseph E. Kopyc and Jane Shulusky (Krzyszowsky). His grandfather, Leon Kopyc, immigrated from Osielec, Poland in 1906 through Ellis Island.
While in the U.S. Air Force from 1957-62, Don received his training in electronics and computer systems. Stationed in Charleston, Maine, he met his wife Betsy Ann Macomber, of Dover-Foxcroft, and they were married in 1961.
Don loved the Maine Coast, and was an avid sailor, outdoorsman and wooden-boat enthusiast. His two sons, Daniel Kopyc (Denver, Colorado) and Mark Kopyc of Bowdoinham, remember him most for imparting his love of learning and sense of adventure — today they honor their father’s passion for science and engineering and his lifelong appreciation for design and craftsmanship. Donald is also blessed by two grandsons, Reed Kopyc of Brunswick, and Casey
Kopyc of Augusta.
He is also survived by his brother, Robert Kopyc (and his wife Joan) of Clifton Park, NY, his sister Carol Slowek, also of Clifton Park, many nieces and a nephew.
A memorial service for Donald will be held on Saturday, Feb 6th, at 1pm, at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 330 Maine Street in Brunswick.
