Ed was born on May 9, 1948 in Bath to Harry J. and Evelyn Smith MacDonald. He was educated in Bath, graduating from Morse High School in 1967, and from SMVTI in 1969 with a degree in Marine Science. Ed began his career at Wright Pierce in Topsham, later transitioning to the Pejepscot Paper Mill, working as Waste Water Treatment Plant Supervisor as well as Director of Safety. Ed went to work for Northern General services in 1985, ending his 20 year career with them when they were bought by Blue Cross Blue Shield. Ed spent the last 15 years of his career as the Loss Control Manager at Maine Municipal Association.
Ed was looking forward to his retirement on February 12. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed spending time with his two sons at his hunting camp in Orland. He was an avid supporter of the Great Pond Mountain Conservation Trust. He was very proud of his Scottish heritage and all things Scottish. For many years, he regularly attended the Maine Highland Games and the Scottish Festival. Angela and Ed visited Scotland in 2012, and were looking forward to a return trip this spring. Ed also enjoyed following local sports teams, including the New England Patriots, the Boston Red Socks, and University of Maine hockey.
The adage Ed lived by was ‘There is a right way and wrong way to do things. Then there is
Ed’s way’.
Ed is survived by his wife of 45 years, Angela, two sons, Ian J. and his partner Kara Glaser of Lewiston, Benjamin D. and his wife Kimberly of Bowdoinham, a daughter Lindsay C. and her husband Allen Daniels of Richmond, five grandchildren, Kylie, Sebastian, Abigail, Evelyn and Alexander, a cousin Steve MacDonald of Rockland, and a sister-in-law Christie Delong and her husband Dean of Woolwich.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the Great Pond Mountain Conservation Trust in his memory at http://greatpondtrust.org/, or via mail to GPMCT PO BOX 266 Orland, Maine 04472.
