HARPSWELL — Elizabeth Jane Gott died on Jan. 28, 2016, at her home with her family due to the recurrence of cancer.

She was born on June 27, 1939, in Melrose, Massachusetts, the only child of Betsey Marie Randall and William Thurlow Alexander. She graduated valedictorian of the Melrose High School class of 1957, received a B.A. from Middlebury College in 1961, and a M.S. from the University of Maine in 1980. She married Gerald H. Gott Jr. of Brunswick on Oct. 13, 1962; and they enjoyed 41 happy years together until his death in 2004.

From 1963 to 1999, Jane taught school for MSAD#75 at Harpswell Islands School, Bowdoinham Community School, West Harpswell School, and Williams-Cone School in Topsham. She loved teaching and all of the many students whose lives she touched. After retirement, she spent over 10 enjoyable years working in the women’s department at L.L. Bean in Freeport.

Jane was a member of the Elijah Kellogg Church, Mid- Coast Retired Educators, Delta Kappa Gamma, Maine Educators, and N.E.A. She loved to read, play cards, especially bridge, spend time with friends and family and travel. She was predeceased by her husband Jerry in 2004. Jane is survived by her daughter Lisa and son-in-law John Secone, two beloved grandchildren, Laura and Kyle, several cousins, and her husband’s family.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 5, 2016, at Elijah Kellogg Church, 917 Harpswell Neck Road, Harpswell, ME, with Rev. John Carson officiating. In lieu of sending flowers, donations may be made in Jane’s memory to the Elijah Kellogg Church, 917 Harpswell Neck Road, Harpswell, ME 04079 or to the American Cancer Society, 1 Bowdoin Mill Island, Topsham, ME 04086.

Arrangements are under the direction and care of Brackett Funeral Home in Brunswick.
