CAPE ELIZABETH – Cape Elizabeth turned 250 years old on Sunday and celebrated the milestone with a well-attended cocktail party at Inn by the Sea.

Dubbed “A Toast to Cape,” the event featured a five-piece jazz ensemble from Cape Elizabeth High School, hors d’oeuvres, a cash bar, and a 250th-themed cake. It capped off a yearlong celebration organized by an anniversary committee and members of the Historical Preservation Society to commemorate the town’s incorporation on Nov. 1, 1765.

A variety of activities, such as bus tours, were offered at different locations in town throughout the last six months that gave residents, and non-residents, a chance to help celebrate the town’s anniversary and learn more about its history.

Barbara Powers, chairwoman of the 250th Anniversary Committee, Historical Preservation Society president Dorothy Higgins and Town Council Chairwoman Kathy Ray gave brief remarks during the reception, each thanking the many volunteers and contributors who helped make the 250th anniversary celebration possible.
