A Bridgton woman who worked as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in Naples pleaded guilty Tuesday to a charge of unlawful delay or destruction of mail.

Kim Murch, 59, was recorded on a hidden surveillance camera on Oct. 14, 2011, as she used scissors to open packages in the back room of Naples’ post office that were intended for another postal worker’s delivery route, according to court records in U.S. District Court in Portland.

Federal authorities started the investigation in April 2011 after receiving complaints from the Veterans Administration that prescription pain medications sent by mail were not being delivered to customers in Naples, according to a prosecution document filed with the court.

Judge D. Brock Hornby allowed Murch to remain free on a personal recognizance bond while the case against her is pending.

Murch is scheduled to be sentenced Feb. 10, when she will face as much as five years in prison and a fine of as much as $250,000.
