A Gardiner man riding a dirt bike was charged Tuesday after reportedly leading a Maine game warden on a chase in Mount Vernon.

Brandon Darveau, 22, was arrested on a charge of eluding a law enforcement officer, Game Warden Ethan Buuck said. Darveau was taken to the Kennebec County jail in Augusta, where he was being held in lieu of $1,000 cash bail.

Buuck stopped to talk to Darveau around 2:30 p.m. at the dam on Wings Mills Road. Buuck said Darveau, who was riding a dirt bike, had ridden on the road illegally to get to the dam. Buuck said there is no trail to the dam.

“After making contact with him, he decided to go back to his house to get identification,” Buuck said. “He took off at a high rate of speed on his dirt bike.”

Buuck pursued Darveau about 2 miles to the Round Stone Mobile Home Park on Dunns Corner Road. Darveau ditched his motorcycle behind a relative’s trailer before ducking into the home, Buuck said.

Buuck waited for other wardens and Maine State Police troopers to arrive to develop a plan to get Darveau out of the trailer, but there was no standoff. Darveau was taken into custody without incident about 3:30 p.m.

“He eventually came out on his own when we knocked on the door,” Buuck said.
