The South Portland Municipal Golf Course played host to the second annual South Portland Junior Open Golf Tournament on July 25. The tournament was open to boys and girls ages 9-17. A total of 53 competitors throughout four divisions played in the event. Boys ages 13-17 and girls ages 13-17 played an 18-hole tournament in the morning, while boys ages 9-12 and girls ages 9-12 played a nine-hole tournament in the afternoon.
The stroke-play event was designed for the competitors to have fun while experiencing the feel of a tournament. Awards were given to first and second place in each division. Each competitor received a golf gift bag for participating, as well as being treated to a barbecue and raffle.
Three of the division winners were repeat champions. Koto Yamada and Stephanie Rodrigue defended their titles in the girls divisions. Yamada won the 9-12 age division again by shooting a nine-hole score of 46, and held off runner-up Ruby Haylock who came in at 49. Rodrigue carded an 18-hole score of 75 to secure the 13-17 girls division over runnerup Janelle Bryant, who finished with an 84.
The boys 9-12 division saw Ryan Stimson defend his title by shooting 38 for the 9-hole round. He was challenged by Peter Malia who came in with a 41. The boys 13-17 division saw the only new champion, Adam White, who had lost on the first playoff hole one year ago. He was able to overcome that disappointment and better his score by three strokes over last year, and carded a 75 for 18 holes. This was the closest finish of all the divisions, as runner up Leif Olsen came in one shot off the pace at 76, and Alex Glidden finished third at 78.
All proceeds from the tournament went to The First Tee of Maine, and The First Tee Program at the South Portland Golf Course.
