Rescuers used a litter to carry an injured hiker a mile and half off the Appalachian Trail Wednesday.

John Jutras, 64, of Hebron, was hiking just south of the Little Bigelow Lean-to at 1:30 p.m. when he injured his knee and thumb about a mile and a half from East Flagstaff Road, according to Cpl. John MacDonald of the Maine Warden Service.

Greg Drummond, of Carrabassett Valley Search and Rescue, determined that several people would be needed to carry Jutras out to the road. More than 20 people responded to the call for volunteers and he was carried out by litter to a waiting ambulance, MacDonald said.

Jutras was taken to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington where he was treated for a dislocated thumb and a knee injury, MacDonald said.
