BRUNSWICK
Do you remember Jazzercise? Or shaking your groove thang while you were sweating to the oldies?
Exercise to music is not a new concept, however the Zumba class at the People Plus Center feels totally new and different.
Focused on strengthening and loosening the muscles in a low-impact way that is great for seniors, the new class offers a full body workout to the rhythm of upbeat music and easy-to-learn dance steps that are good for seniors and not too complicated.
We all know that exercise is good for both the body and the mind — especially as we age. Our Zumba instructor, Bea Blakemore, is French and brings an upbeat style with her.
A native Parisian, Blakemore studied ballet, modern jazz and ethnic dance styles in Europe. She is energetic and outgoing. Having lost about 30 pounds in the last five years, Blakemore would be the first to tell you how dance and regular exercise has changed her life.
“I love to share my passion for dance and health with every person,” Blakemore said when asked why she has brought Zumba to People Plus. “Seniors may think they can’t move or dance any more and we are here to prove they can.”
Come try the new Zumba class at People Plus. All fitness levels are welcome and no dance experience is necessary.
Zumba takes place at 10 a.m. on Mondays every week at the People Plus Center, located at 35 Union St. Call 729-0757 for more information.
