SOMERVILLE, Mass. — Zack Trause scored two return touchdowns in a two-minute span of the second half, sending Tufts University to a 42-24 win over Bates in a New England Small College Athletic Conference game Saturday afternoon.

Falmouth’s Jack Cooleen also scored twice for the Jumbos, who are 2-0 after ending a 31-game losing streak last Saturday with a win over Hamilton.

Trause started a run of 19 unanswered points for Tufts by returning a kickoff 82 yards for a touchdown with 1:06 left in the third quarter. The return followed Matt Cannone’s 6-yard scoring pass to Mark Riley that gave the Bobcats (0-2) a 24-23 lead with 1:21 left in the third quarter.

Trause then scord on a 49-yard punt return 58 seconds into the fourth after Bates went three-and-out on its next drive.

Cannone completed 16 of 22 passes for 182 yards and three touchdowns for the Bobcats. Riley had nine catches, finishing with 142 yards and two touchdowns.

Cooleen caught two of Jack Doll’s three touchdown passes – one of 23 yards that put Tufts up 20-17 in the third quarter and another of 3 yards that completed the scoring.

AMHERST 30, BOWDOIN 7: Alex Berluti threw a 97-yard touchdown pass to Jackson McGonagle and the Jeffs (2-0) scored 21 unanswered third-quarter points to pull away from the Polar Bears (0-2) in a NESCAC game in Brunswick.

Berluti finished 11 of 15 for 187 yards.

Bowdoin scored with 45 seconds left in the game on a 1-yard run by Mac Caputi, who completed 14 passes for 102 yards.

Tyler Grant had a game-high 86 yards rushing for the Polar Bears and Daniel Barone caught seven passes for 61 yards.

MIDDLEBURY 27, COLBY 7: Matt Milano threw for 290 yards and a pair of touchdowns for the Panthers (1-1) in a NESCAC victory over the Mules (0-2) in Waterville.

After falling behind 14-0 in the first quarter, Colby scored on a 2-yard run by Carl Lipani that capped a 16-play, 77-yard drive.

Lipani finished with 50 yards rushing and Gabe Harrington threw for 156 yards for the Mules, who were outgained 458-211 in total yards by the Panthers.

WESTERN NEW ENGLAND 80, MAINE MARITIME 16: Tyler Ward threw for 321 yards and four touchdowns, and the Golden Bears (3-0) overwhelmed the Mariners (1-2), compiling more than 700 yards in Castine.

Jacob Dolan scored two touchdowns for Maine Maritime, one on a 38-yard run on the Mariners’ opening drive and another on a 34-yard pass from Michael Fahey just before halftime that made it 38-16.

Terrence N’Dabian ran for 157 yards Nick O’Connell rushed for 113 for Western New England, which outgained the Mariners 769-372.
