AUGUSTA — Maine officials are working on a plan for protecting against mosquito-borne diseases.

The Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry was directed by lawmakers to develop the plan in cooperation with the Department of Health and Human Services.

WMTW-TV says lawmakers are expecting results by December.

The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention said this week that a second mosquito pool in York County has tested positive for Eastern equine encephalitis. West Nile virus also has been found in Maine birds in past years.

State Rep. James Dill, D-Old Town, who’s chairman of the Joint Standing Committee on Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry, said lawmakers want state agencies to create a threshold to be met to warrant a response such as pesticide spraying.
