AUGUSTA — Earlier this month, Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger, which has raised and contributed more than $4.8 million to help end hunger in Maine since 1990, distributed some of those funds in the form of five checks for $300 each to the Agencies on Aging Meals on Wheels programs in recognition of National Older Americans Month in Maine.

The presentation took place at the Spectrum Generations Hallowell location, which serves as the headquarters of the Maine Association of Area Agencies on Aging.

The five agencies, which combined serve the entire state, include: Southern Maine Area Agency on Aging, which services Cumberland and York counties; Seniors Plus, which serves Androscoggin, Oxford and Franklin counties; Spectrum Generations, which serves Kennebec, Knox, Lincoln, Sagadahoc, Somerset and Waldo counties; Eastern Area Agency on Aging, which serves Hancock, Penobscot, Piscataquis and Hancock counties; and the Aroostook Area Agency on Aging, which serves Aroostook County.

“This donation helps meet a need that is not felt just this month, but throughout the year,” said Jon Paradise, of the Maine Credit Union League. “With more than 10 percent of seniors in our state experiencing food insecurity, this is a problem that demands our attention every day of the year.”

Historically, Older Americans Month has been a time to acknowledge the contributions of past and current older people to our country.

Each May, Older Americans Month is celebrated across the country through ceremonies, events, fairs and other activities.

Every year, nearly all of Maine’s credit unions participate in the Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger.
