BRUNSWICK — Brunswick firefighters were called to a reported building fire this morning on Jordan Avenue that was extinguished by the occupants woken by a smoke detector.

Brunswick Fire Chief Ken Brillant said firefighters responded to an apartment building at 85 Jordan Avenue at 5:04 a.m. and went inside an apartment where a trash can had been on fire. A smoke detector woke the occupants, who put out the fire but the trash can was still smoking, Brillant said, creating smoke in that apartment and the apartment above it.

Firefighters ventilated the three-unit apartment building to get the smoke out and made sure the fire hadn’t extended into any cabinets or other areas, and then let the occupants of the two affected apartments back in.

The fire is believe to have been caused by inappropriately discarded smoking materials.

Wednesday night at around 7:50 p.m., firefighters were called to 103 Mill St. for report of a female run over by a vehicle and were initially told her leg was trapped under the car.

Brillant said the woman pulled into an icy, inclined driveway and when the vehicle would go no further, she shut it off. As she was walking down the driveway, the car slid backwards, hit and knocked down the woman. The back tire didn’t run over her leg but her leg was stuck, wedged against the tire. Firefighters used wheel blocks to keep the vehicle from moving any more and helped get her free.

Brillant said the woman was transported to Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick. He didn’t believe she sustained serious injuries.
