HALLOWELL — Efficiency Maine has expanded its appliance rebate program to include rebates for additional appliances through June 2013.
Now included in the program are high-efficiency electric water heaters, room air conditioners, room air purifiers and freezers. The program continues to offer rebates for the purchase of Energy Star-certified dehumidifiers, clothes washers and refrigerators.
According to Energy Star, electric energy use for appliances represents about 13 percent of a home’s total energy use. The products now covered by the rebate program are among the highest energy-using appliances.
“We’re pleased to be able to expand this program from three to seven high-efficiency products,” said Residential Program Manager Andy Meyer. “Making the switch from older models to new, Energy Star-certified appliances can mean hundreds of dollars in energy savings each year for the typical Maine household.”
Switching to an Energy Star washer, for example, can save the average household $112 each year in electricity costs. Homeowners replacing refrigerators that are more than 20 years old can expect significant electrical savings, around $150 annually.
