BRUNSWICK — The Gelato Fiasco has been named to the 2012 Empact100 list by Empact, an organization that focuses on making entrepreneurship a career option for everyone around the world.

According to a news release, the award recognizes the top 100 companies started by young entrepreneurs and will be presented to Gelato Fiasco’s founders Joshua Davis, 30, and Bruno Tropeano, 29, on Sept. 28 at a ceremony at the White House.

The Gelato Fiasco is one of New England’s premier creators of artisanal desserts, with stores in Brunswick and Portland and gelato sold at more than 200 grocery stores and restaurants throughout New England. The company was founded by Davis and Tropeano in Brunswick in August 2007.

The list was finalized by the 2012 Empact Academy. Members of the academy are among the United States’ leading entrepreneurs, and include:

— Aaron Batalion, founder and CTO, Living Social

“Bruno and I are thrilled to be granted this honor,” Davis said. “While nothing can beat the privilege of having folks enjoy our desserts every day at our stores or in their homes, it’s pretty cool to be heading to the White House, too.”

The Gelato Fiasco currently employs 36 people across its retail and wholesale businesses. The company makes gelato from scratch using house recipes, milk from Maine farms, and natural cane sugar.

The Empact100 list is comprised of the top 100 companies in the Empact Showcase, a compilation of the United States’ leading entrepreneurs who are age 30 and under, and whose annual revenues are more than $100,000. In 2012, the companies on the Empact Showcase contributed more than 8,000 jobs to the economy, and controlled $1 billion in revenue.

“The annual Empact100 and Empact Showcase are both a testament to the impact that entrepreneurs are making on our economy, and an inspiration to aspiring entrepreneurs,” Sarah Green, co-founder of Empact100, said in the news release announcing the honor for The Gelato Fiasco.
