A three-alarm fire in Westbrook tonight heavily damaged an apartment building and injured one person.

Every firetruck in the city was sent to the blaze at the 2½-story building at 683 Main St., said a Westbrook police and fire dispatcher. Ten firetrucks from several neighboring communities provided mutual aid.

One injured person was taken to a hospital by ambulance. The extent of the person’s injuries were unknown at press time. 

Fire crews responded quickly to the fire when the first alarm was sounded, around 9 p.m. The fire station is a block away, at 570 Main St.

The fire was under control about a hour and half later. Main Street was shut down for several hours.
Witnesses told WGME-TV that they first saw thick black smoke billowing from the building, and then flames.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
