AUGUSTA — Bangor and Fayette/Staples won play-in games today to advance to the double-elimination round of the American Legion baseball state tournament, which begins Wednesday in Augusta.
Bangor defeated Gardiner/Post 204, 8-6, by erasing a 5-2 deficit with four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. After Gardiner tied the score in the top of the eighth, Bangor’s Dylan Morris hit a two-run homer to right-center field in the bottom of the eighth to give the Comrades the lead again.
Bangor’s Joe Stanevicz pitched 4 2/3 innings of relief for the win, allowing one run on two hits.
Fayette/Staples earned its spot with a 3-2 win over Westbrook. Fayette/Staples starting pitcher Jeff Gelinas pitched a complete-game six-hitter, but his team still trailed 2-1 entering the bottom of the ninth.
After the first two batters reached on an error and a single, Westbrook relieved pitcher Matt Weimer, who was working on a three-hitter. Jack Kenney then grounded into a forceout, and Max Dube singled home the tying run. One out later, Gelinas batted for the first time all game and drilled an 0-2 pitch to left-center for a game-winning double.
