The 13th TD Bank Beach to Beacon 10K road race was run this morning in Cape Elizabeth with overcast skies and moderate temperatures. And the conditions were ideal for Lineth Chepkurui of Kenya.
In the women’s race, Chepkurui continued an outstanding season with a record-setting win. Her time of 30:59.4 broke the course record of 31:25.8 set by Alventina Ivanova of Kenya in 2006. Chepkurui also set a world record at the 12K distance in May at the Bay to the Breakers in San Francisco.
The overall winner of the men’s race was Gebre Gebremariam of Ethiopia, who became the first non-Kenyan to win the men’s race since 1999. He finished in 27:40.4.
The top Maine finisher in the men’s race was, as expected, Pat Tarpy of Yarmouth in 29:27. There were two Maine women who crossed the finish line together, but even though they were holding hands as they crossed, Kristin Barry of Scarborough was the winner with a time of 34:34.9 and Sheri Piers of Falmouth was second at 34:35.2. Piers set the Maine women’s course record last year with a time of 34:17.
