BRUNSWICK — Helen Horowitz, 85, died March 14 at her Brunswick home.
She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on May 30, 1923, the daughter of Harold and Rae (Littman) Schuman.
One of a handful of female students admitted to City College of New York, she graduated from the college in 1943.
She married Harold Horowitz on Oct. 15, 1943, and worked for the Defense Department while he served in World War II, flying reconnaissance missions in Europe.
After World War II, she lived the life of a military wife, moving over 17 times to follow her husband’s career as an Air Force officer. Their final station was at the Topsham Air Force Station.
While raising their three daughters, she also pursued her own career as an elementary school teacher, teaching third grade at Union Street School and Coffin in Brunswick for many years.
She loved her family and friends beyond measure. She never let an opportunity for gift-giving pass her by, and adored the holidays, particularly Christmas and St. Patrick’s Day.
Her hobbies included reading, movies, music, good company, long conversations, and laughter. She wrote beautiful letters and haiku.
She was predeceased by her husband Harold and granddaughter Margot Satow.
Survivors include sister Jean Romm and her husband Elliot of Chicago; daughter Kay Satow and her husband Nick, of Hinsdale, Ill., daughter Joyce Horowitz and her husband Doug Thurlow, of Aurora, Colo., daughter Bernie Horowitz of Portland; grandchildren Matt Satow, Lee and Elaine Thurlow; and numerous friends.
A celebration of her life is being planned for her birthday on May 30, in Brunswick.
Memorial donations may be made to the March of Dimes, the Good Shepherd Food Bank or the Pine Tree Society.
